Can You Celebrate Valentine’s Day on a Budget?
Valentine’s Day is just around the corner and time to give your special sweetheart a loving and caring gift. Some people may believe that Valentine’s Day is a day full of expensive and costly gifts to show your affection for another person. But, does it have to be so expensive? With the downturn of our economy and possibly having less to spend on a romantic gift, is it possible to give a romantic gift to your sweetheart and still stay within your budget? Sure. Here are some ways to consider.
1. When planning a gift for your sweetheart, think of his or her special interests. If he likes a special sports team, plan an evening of activities at home and watch the game on a big screen television. This would be less expensive that purchasing tickets and traveling to the stadium to watch the game. He could even record the games and watch again later. You could have snacks, drinks and a special dessert for the evening. Also, be sure to decide upon her special interests like maybe a romantic movie or a book by her favorite author. You could plan an evening around watching her favorite movie along with snacks, fruit, dessert and wine.
2. Jewelry is probably the number one gift purchased for Valentine’s Day. Diamonds may be a girl’s favorite in jewelry, but there are also other gemstone rings that are less expensive and just as beautiful. Consider purchasing her birthstone in a ring or maybe earrings, which could be less expensive.
3. It may be customary to dine out on Valentine’s Day, but probably more expensive to dine on this particular day. Why not plan a special dinner at home on Valentine’s Day, and then dine out on the next day when the cost should be more affordable and not nearly as crowded.
4. Valentine’s Day is probably the biggest sales day of the year for florists. Flowers, as well as chocolates and romantic dinners, are the customary gifts for Valentine’s Day. These are the gifts you traditionally hear more about. There are ways to give fresh flowers without the high cost of a florist. Check to see if a discount will be given for ordering well in advance. Potted plants are beautiful, less expensive and will last much longer. A houseplant may be the type of plant your sweetheart would enjoy more and since it would last for years, she could enjoy it for a much longer time. You can add a single rose or a special card tucked inside the leaves of the plant. Sometimes roses are less expensive from a supermarket or a lawn and garden center. Just check around to find the best price on fresh flowers.
5. If your child has a Valentine’s Day party at school or you have a party planned at work and volunteers are needed to supply items for the party, consider bringing home-baked desserts. Another idea is to volunteer to supply the paper goods, like plates and napkins as this can be less expensive.
6. Everyone likes getting love notes. Why not make a card or even purchase a card and write a poem or a heart felt message of love in the card to your sweetheart. Adding a greeting card with your hand written message of how much she means to you or he means to you then attach to a romantic gift will surely make Valentine’s Day even more memorable.
There are many ways to celebrate Valentine’s Day on a budget. You can say, “I love you” and give your sweetheart a romantic gift without skimping on your loving sentiments. By listening to each other, sharing, caring and being considerate of each other, you can make every day of the week a special Valentine’s Day. Give it a try!
