If my father claim me on his return, will it make me get less money if i file?
I have not lived with nor have i been supported by my father since i moved out and went to college….I am 22 years old..i have my own place and pay all of my bills. All expenses that i incur, i pay them…not half, but all! He hasn’t given me any money in the past 3-4 years…and this year, just to add, no birthday gift nor christmas! Not saying he is a bad father, but things have not been so great for him lately, but its just the same for me, but harder…im struggling trying to make it…which he acts to care nothing about…what should i do? in regards to my tax return..

He shouldn’t be claiming you, you need to claim yourself. It does hurt your tax position. So basically, Yes it will make you lose money.

if you claim yourself and your father claims you you’re both in serious trouble, especially since you have to have your social security on both. so be sure to tell him that he can’t claim you.

If you haven’t lived at home, assuming since 18?, your father should not even be claiming you on his return. If he is, then that would be his problem.
My dad did that one time, by mistake of his Tax person, when I filed my taxes and he received a notice from the IRS requesting reimbursement of the credit he received for me, plus Penalties and interest accrued. So. If your dad claims you, which he has no right to, and you file your own taxes stating that no one should be claiming you, your father will receive a notice in the mail requesting a reimbursement to the IRS.
